Northern Command
Background
The objective of the IDF Southern Command is to defend the southern border of the State of Israel - from the Yishai River in the north until the Taba Pass in the south, from Taba until the Rafah coast in the north. In addition, the Command is charged with the protections of settlements near the Gaza Strip and the Green Line and defense of the southern international border with Egypt until the Dugit communities in the north. The task of the command is to protect and create a sense of security for the Israeli population and for the Gaza Strip region. The Southern Command is responsible for all units situated in the Arava region, the Negev and Eilat.  The areas under Southern Command jurisdiction are from the eastern border with Jordan (about 400 km) until the western border with Egypt (about 240 km).
