The Chief Military rabbinate was founded with the establishment of the IDF in 1948. This branch works in coordination with the Human Resources Branch. The Chief Military Rabbi, appointed by the Chief of General Staff, is the highest religious figure in the IDF and advises the Chief of General Staff on religious manners. According to law, each unit in the IDF must have a representative of the Rabbinate advising them. These representatives are responsible for providing all religious needs for soldiers serving in their units.
