The IDF Ground Forces in its current form was established in 1986, following Operation Peace for Galilee.  The IDF decided it was necessary to combine the ground units in order to create better coordination and a sense of reliance between the troops. Its headquarters was subsequently called the Field Corps Headquarters, bringing together the four parts of the field corps- infantry, armor, artillery and engineering. In 1999 the branch name was changed to The IDF Ground Forces in accordance with the "IDF 2000" plan, designed to transform the IDF into an organization able to cope with future challenges. This branch was established in order to strengthen the combat system, to disperse jurisdiction from the General staff to other branches and to modernize the IDF's operational concept.

The IDF Ground Forces is responsible for the general organization and structure of field forces; infantry, paratroop, artillery, armor, engineer and field intelligence. As well as combat support forces; munitions, logistics, teleprocessing and manpower, in all the levels of the Command, from the lone soldier, through the battalion, brigade and division. The primary duty of the branch is development, acquisition and maintenance of combat facilities, and taking responsibility for planning and the administration of manpower, directorate, training and military exercises. The branch mission is to complete its assigned tasks through analysis of field combat characteristics - present and future - during general warfare and border clashes. This will effectively reinforce IDF operations and administration. Today, most routine defense missions are implemented by the IDF Ground Forces.

As of 2006, the Ground Forces branch has been responsible for the general forming of forces, including advancement and acquisition of logistic warfare materials, munitions, army personnel management and teleprocessing apparatus. On 12.1.02, an additional Major General was appointed to the IDF Ground Forces, making it the first military arm overseen by two Major Generals. Major General Meir Klifi was appointed to the position of Deputy Commander of the IDF Ground Forces Doctrine, Directorate and Training.
