A file containing classified information about Dirani's lifestyle circulated and was collected by the intelligence community. Based on the intelligence information, the chief of staff at the time, Ehud Barak, and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin gave the signal to raid Dirani's house. Dirani was kidnapped from his house in Lebanon in the middle of the night in 1994. In 2004 he was released in an exchange of prisoners with the Hezbollah.
