Major General Tamari went on a patrol in the Bet Shean area to monitor firsthand a pursuit after suspected terrorists in the Jordan Valley. At around 2 P.M., Major General Tamari decided to return to the base in an Air Force helicopter. The pilots, who successfully flew the plane in the harsh weather conditions, failed to land in the midst of the strong winds and the heavy fog. The helicopter crashed into the main antenna of the base, started spinning out of control and eventually crashed in the central yard of the Command. Major General Tamari, z"l, is considered one of the IDF's most brilliant officers, and was mentioned more than once as a possible candidate for Chief of Staff. During his army service, Tamari was commander of Paratroopers' special forces.
