26 July 1956 : Egypt nationalizes the Suez Canal
Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal and forbade Israeli ships from sailing through it. For this reason, among others, Israel, Britain, and France initiated the Sinai campaign (Operation Kadesh), in which Israeli forces captured half of the Sinai Peninsula and reached the waterfront. After the operation was completed, the United Nations declared the Suez Canal to be part of Egypt.
