Uri Ilan, one of the five Golani soldiers who were captured by the Syrians in 8.12.54 near Syrian posts in the Golan Heights, committed suicide in a Damascus jail. Ilan, who was repeatedly tortured by his captors, preferred to put an end to his life, especially so that those who interrogated him would not get any information out of him. In the fold of his pants was a little note punctured with a wooden toothpick: "Everybody has already been killed, I'm waiting for my sentence, I don't know anything about the rest. Bury me next to Gaby. I am not a traitor. Uri Ilan."
