As a part of the Israel Defense Force environmental plan to move its bases located in central Israel to the Negev (southern Israel), the Israel Air Force base located in the Ben-Gurion International Airport in Lod will be transferred on Monday, August 25, 2008 to its new home in the IAF base in Nevatim. The move will strengthen the Israel Air Force – the new infrastructure in the base will advance and improve the IAF's heavy cargo/transportation capabilities. After 49 years of being home to the IAF's cargo/transportation aircraft, the base in Lod will be transferred to its new home in Nevatim during a salute flight, lead by the Commander of the IAF, Maj. Gen. Ido Nechushtan, in which cargo planes will fly over Negev communities and adjacent communities to the Gaza Strip. On Wednesday, August 27, 2008, the new base will be inaugurated in a national ceremony. Participants of this ceremony include President of Israel, Shimon Peres, Minister of Defense, Ehud Barak, IDF Chief of General Staff, Lieu. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, several ministers, heads of various IDF corps, mayors, and heads of southern community councils. The building of the base and its transfer is in full coordination and cooperation with Israel's various government offices—the Ministry of National Infrastructure, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Israel Land Administration, the Israel Water Authority, and the Israel Antiquities Authority. The new IAF base in Nevatim will fulfill all the tasks of the base that was in Lod. The base in Lod will be fully cleared out by the end of 2009, and the grounds will be returned to the Israel Land Administration.
