The OC Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant and other senior officers were hosted today, January 6th 2009, at a conference between the heads of the north-western negev regional councils.

The OC Southern Command said during the visit:
"It is important that we fully appreciate the value of this calm period for the residents of the area. The quietness allows the development of the regional infrastructure, agriculture and economical prosperity.

"Looking a year back, it is agreeable that in relation to the goal set for us – the goals of operation Cast Lead were achieved. A new order was created – We did not experience such a quiet period in the last decade. Yet we must be weary that the horizon is not yet safe and we are preparing for the worst if it so happens.

"For the preservation of this peace, the division of roles between us is clear. The IDF operates against terror attacks, and you, the civilians, maintain prosperity. Today's tour presented how a short peace can lead to success in all fields. Our job is to make sure that you can live your lives."

The officers toured different villages in the region, in order to closely assess their daily routine following Operation Cast Lead. Brig. Gen. Eyal Eizenberg, Commander of the IDF Gaza Division, briefed the regional council heads on the regional state of security and IDF operations in the region.
