IDF OC Central Command Stresses Human Dignity as a Central Value
20 May 2009 , 00:46
Col. Itay Virub, commander of the Kfir infantry brigade, was summoned today by Maj. Gen. Gadi Shamni, OC Central Command.  In their conversation, Maj. Gen. Shamni expressed his disagreement with statements made by Col. Virub during a court-martial regarding actions taken by soldiers under his command during operations in the Judea and Samaria region.

Maj. Gen. Shamni emphasized to Col. Virub that his attempt to explain the violence committed by his soldiers misrepresented reality and trivialized the severity of such incidents. Col. Virub's statements, according to Maj. Gen. Shamni, do not correspond with the 'Spirit of the IDF' (the IDF's ethical code) nor do they correspond with IDF regulations.  Maj. Gen. Shamni added that these statements may cause for confusion amongst soldiers about what is right and what is wrong.  Maj. Gen. Shamni made the decision to issue the Brigade Commander with a disciplinary demerit.

The commander of the GOC of the Central Command emphasized the significance of avoiding the use of force against detainees, stressing that safeguarding human dignity is a central value in the Central Command and the IDF.
