The Deputy Chief of the General Staff speaks about the IDF agenda for 2010
On Tuesday morning (Feb. 2), the Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Maj. Gen. Benny Gantz, presented the IDF agenda for the year of 2010 in a press briefing at his office in Tel Aviv. "The year 2009 was a busy year for the IDF and the defense staff. It began with a large operation in the Gaza Strip, Operation Cast Lead, which was carried out exemplarily by the commanders and soldiers in the field who brought about the relative quiet in the South, a quiet joining the one at the northern border," said Maj. Gen. Gantz and explained that this significant quiet is based on the accomplishments of the military activities. "We can be pleased, but we cannot trust this quiet. It is a dangerous paradox, and we cannot fall into it," said the Deputy Chief of the General Staff and presented the bulk of threats at different fronts: "Hamas is receiving smuggled goods from Iran and its allies through seaways, on the ground and through tunnels. In addition to that, weaponry is being smuggled by Syria to Hezbollah, supported by Iran." Maj. Gen. Gantz emphasized that he does not expect that one of the sides have any interest in a military strike, and that he hopes that the quiet on Israel's borders will prevail, but that nevertheless, the IDF has the responsibility to be prepared on all borders. In addition to speaking about the security situation on the different borders, the Deputy Chief of the General Staff stressed the efforts of the home front, which depends on the cooperation between the IDF Home Front Command and the local authorities. "The home front is our opponents' target, especially through the firing of high-trajectory weapons. There is a defensive organization at the home front, which I recommend should be looked at under the aspect of raising the preparedness, and not as unnecessary frenzy." Speaking about the organization and management and with an emphasis on the equipping and arming of the IDF, he said: "The IDF, under the leadership of the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, started a long-term program based on the different needs of its various bodies and corps two years ago." In the year of 2010, the IDF is going to continue balancing its budget as needed. On the issue of human resources, Maj. Gen. Gantz explained that the IDF is continuing to maintain its manpower, "because at the end of the day, every single person in Israel relies on the soldiers and commanders in the field". Regarding the attempted terror attack on Monday (Feb. 1) when explosive devices were planted on Israeli beaches, Maj. Gen. Gantz said that the IDF is investigating the incidents. "Those attempts show a lot of decisiveness on the part of terror organizations to carry out attacks against us, considering the difficulty of carrying out such an attack," he said and added: "The incidents indicate the challenges we will still have to face." He emphasized that the security forces will continue to carry out necessary investigations until further notice.
