Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola visits Israel to strengthen cooperation between Israel and NATO

On Wednesday (Nov. 18), the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola arrived in Israel for an official visit. Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola will be staying in Israel for two days as the guest of the IDF Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi.
 
This is the third time Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola's visits Israel in the last four years, both in his current position and in his former capacity as Chief of Defense of Italy. He has met with Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi twice before. 
 
The visit was scheduled following an invitation given to the Admiral by the Chief of the General Staff during a meeting between the two at the NATO Generals' Conference in Brussels in November 2008. Its purpose is to further strengthen and deepen the military and defensive cooperation between Israel and NATO and to update each other on different strategic matters, mainly concerning the Middle East.
 
Admiral Di Paola will be welcomed by the Chief of the General Staff and an honorary guard at the Rabin Military Base in Tel Aviv. During his visit, he will hold meetings with his hosts, the Chief of the General Staff and the Minister of Defense, Mr. Ehud Barak, as well as with other senior IDF officers.
 
In addition to that Admiral Di Paolo will visit the Yahalom Engineering Corps Special Unit, as well as the Palmachim Airbasease, where he will be briefed on the Israel Air Force's role in Operation Cast Lead and the Second Lebanon War. Furthermore, the Admiral will be touring the Central and Southern Commands. 
 
The Admiral will be accompanied on his visit by his wife, Mrs. Roberta Iunca.
