IDF Spokesperson Unit opens Twitter account to provide users worldwide with easy access to information

The IDF has opened a Twitter account, as part of the IDF Spokesperson Unit's efforts to utilize the opportunities offered by "new media" platforms in order to improve accessibility to its information. The Twitter account thus joins the IDF YouTube channel that was opened during Operation Cast Lead.

The official page of the IDF Spokesperson Unit can be found at: http://twitter.com/IDFSpokesperson. The account is updated in real-time with all of the News Desk's beepers and text messages relating to operational events, facilitating easy access for every twitter user to relevant information.

In addition to that, "tweets" will include links to new pictures and official announcements posted online to the IDF blog, and new IDF footage and videos released on YouTube. The twitter account will also provide facts, figures and statistics related to current and operational events.

Twitter is a free social networking an micro-blogging website that allows its users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters. It is quickly gaining vast popularity and is used today by almost 40 million people. Thanks to the easy access to information on the website, Twitter has become one of the main news sources for current events worldwide.
