An IDF soldier was lightly injured and a Palestinian was killed in an incident at the northern Gazan border

On Monday night (Aug 24), a Palestinian was killed and an IDF soldier was lightly injured during an incident that occurred at the Gazan border. Two mortar shells that were fired from the Gaza Strip earlier in the evening, landed on Israeli territory, close to Zikim. An IDF soldiers suffered a light head injury, apparently while he was seeking shelter from the fire.

The mortar shells were fired after IDF forces had opened fire at three suspects who were seen approaching the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip. The Palestinians reported one casualty, the other two apparently left the area. The three had presumably been trying to plant an explosive device next to the security fence.

Two weeks earlier a number of mortar shells were fired at the Erez crossing while a Palestinian man was being transported to Israel to receive medical treatment. In response to the incident, the IAF hit a tunnel used to smuggle weaponry in the southern Gaza Strip.
