The Medical Corps is preparing for a possible worsening of the situation with the Swine Flu. The corps recently purchased a stock of the Tamiflu vaccine and is expected to purchase another vaccine, the Relenza.
"We are preparing for the winter season, in which the flu could worsen due to a more contagious virus," says Head of the Epidemiology Department of the IDF Health Branch, Major Dr. Yael Bar-Seev. "In case of negative spreading of the virus, the soldiers affected by the virus will be given treatment in order to prevent it from spreading. Continuous and regular treatment to all soldiers in essential units will be considered," adds Major Dr. Yael Bar-Seev. In addition, Major Dr. Bar-Seev is making sure to emphasize that soldiers getting the Swine Flu is less threatening, based on the fact that this is a young and generally healthy population.
The Corps notes that the chances of getting sick can be minimized in simple ways, which don't require preventative medicine. "It is important to remember that Swine Flu, such as many other illnesses, is contagious, and therefore hygiene is extremely important," says Major Dr. Bar-Seev. She recommends washing hands often, avoiding touching your noise, mouth and eyes with unwashed hands and covering your mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing using your arm.
The Medical Corps will give a presentation to all IDF soldiers regarding this matter.
