On Wednesday (Mar. 18) the Military Court of the Samaria Region sentenced Ihab Abu Riel, a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade terrorist organization of the Balata RC, to six years in jail for planning a poisoning attack at the restaurant Barbecue Express in early 2008.
Ihab Abu Riel worked for three years at the restaurant located in Ramat Gan and planned the attack with the aid of an accomplice. The attack would take place on a busy day of the week, Tuesday, and a white odorless poison that takes effect only hours after consumption would be panted in the food. Both were working for the Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigade that was supposed to provide them with the toxic materials for the attack. They claimed the attack was planned to avenge the death of Imad Muygnieh the previous military leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization. Abu Riel also agreed to join the Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigade. At the time of his arrest, the toxic material was being attained from Nablus. His arrest thus prevented the fatal attack that was to occur later that day.
Before the court gave its final verdict, the defendant, Abu Riel, addressed the court’s judge, claiming that he was in a difficult emotional state and suicidal because his soul mate chose to marry another at the time.
As the court gave its verdict the judge, Maj. Yariv Navon, explained that, “The accused has exploited in a perverse and hostile manner the working permit that was granted to him by the State of Israel.”
On Wednesday (Mar. 18), the Military Court of Appeal gave harsh sentences to three members of Parliament of the Hamas terrorist organization, adding 6 months to their prison terms.
The three Hamas members, Halil Rabai, Mohammed Tal and Fadal Hamdan, were arrested in June 2006 following the abduction of St. Sgt. Gilad Shalit. The Military Court of the Judea Region sentenced the accused to 33 to 38 months in prison.
The president of the court Col. Aaron Mashniot noted during the discussions, “There is no discussion on the fact that Hamas is a terrorist organization and is a threat. A war that has to be fought against terrorist organizations in general and Hamas in particular, must hold senior officials of these organizations responsible, as they help strengthen their status among the Palestinian public.”
