On Tuesday (Feb. 17), the National Internet Security Association discussed the range of activities that are being carried out in the Israeli Ministry of Education, in cooperation with the Israel Police, Microsoft Corporation and several other volunteer groups. The IDF also took part during principle activities geared towards increasing the awareness of the hidden dangers on the internet. Soldiers from the Computer Service Directorate were sent to schools all over the country to give an educational presentation and held activities students related to internet safety.

"We are well aware that the IDF officers that go to schools have a great influence on the youth; the soldiers are close to them and are perceived as respectable" explains an IDF participant in the project, Col. Ofer Levinger, Head of the Leshem Unit in the Computer Service Directorate."We are familiar with the information and are utilizing our resources to educate."

During the presentation, the soldiers spoke with the students about the different types of activities that they encounter on the internet on a daily basis, and helped them identify signs of danger. Lt. Tal Shechem, Head of the Mamram team, also volunteered in conjunction with the project and attended the student presentation in the Ohel Shem School in Ramat Gan. "It is important for them to understand that the network is opened to everyone and that the information that is transferred through it could reach get into the wrong hands and become harmful."

"This is the reason that we decided to also take part in the project this year for the fifth time,” says Col. Levinger.  The IDF officers that volunteer at these schools leave a positive impression and get remarkable reactions from the students. "I am hoping that we will continue in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, and I am proud of the people of the Computer Service Directorate who have been doing a great job." Dorit Bachar, a supervisor at the Ministry of Education who has been in charge of the project, reinforced the project's objectives; "Students learn a lot of crucial information and they leave satisfied as a result of the presentations."
