New appointed Military Attache in the US, Deputy Chief of the General Staff and others

On Thursday (Aug 6), the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi decided on a number of appointments within the IDF Headquarters, which were approved by the Minister of Defense, Ehud Barak.

In accordance with the decision of the Chief of the General Staff, the GOC of the Southern Command during the past two years, Maj. Gen. Gadi Shamni, will be appointed as Israel's Military Attache in the United States, replacing Maj. Gen. Benny Gantz who will be appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff. Benny Gantz is thus going to replace Maj. Gen. Dan Harel.

Among the positions held by Maj. Gen. Shamni during the last few years, are Chief Officer of the Infantry Corps, Commander of the Gaza Division, Head of the Operations Directorate and Military Secretary to the Prime Minister, at the time Ariel Sharon.

The Commander of the GOC Army Headquarters, Maj. Gen. Avi Mizrahi, will be appointed as the GOC of the Central Command instead of Maj. Gen. Shamni. Maj. Gen. Avi Mizrahi enlisted in the IDF in 1975 and volunteered for the Golani Brigade Commando Unit. Throughout his service he moved to the Armored Corps and advanced in rank and position; among other things, he served as a company commander in the Yishay Formation, company commander in the Bnei Or Formation, Deputy Battalion Commander in the Kfir Formation, Commander of the Merkavut Nahshon Battalion, Deputy Commander of the Armored Corps Reserves Brigade, Commander of the Armored Corps Department at the Ground Training Center, and Commander of the Armored Corps Akvot Habarzel Brigade.

In 1982 he was discharged from active military service and until 1988 worked for the General Security Service abroad. In 1988, he returned to the IDF as a career soldier.

Maj. Gen. Mizrahi served as the Commander of the Ga'ash Formation, the representative of the GOC Army Headquarters in the United States, GOC Army Headquarters Chief of Staff, Commander of the Technological and Logistics Directorate and the Commander of the GOC Army Headquarters.

The Chief of the General Staff also announced that Brig. Gen. Sami Turgeman, who recently ended his position as Commander of the Ga'ash Formation, will be appointed Commander of the GOC Army Headquarters instead of Maj. Gen. Avi Mizrahi. Prior to his position as a division commander, Brig. Gen. Turgeman served, among other things, as Commander of the Operations Brigade in the Operations Directorate, and as the Chief Officer of the Armored Corps.
