The Combat Camera Unit serves the state of Israel by taking pictures and videos during IDF operations and risking their lives to bring the truth to the people.

As an army of the people, with a compulsory military draft, the IDF has assumed a unique responsibility.  The IDF not only secures the country’s borders and democratic way of life, but has also challenged itself with the task of educating the public in regard to field operations. The IDF holds its soldiers to the highest standards and have taken upon itself to inform the people through its very soldiers, of the operations that it performs and the nature of the enemy that it is fighting. All this is being accomplished by the Combat Camera Unit.

The IDF Spokesperson Combat Camera Unit, commanded by Major Tzvika Golan, was reestablished in January 2007.  This specialized unit is made up of two divisions of combat soldier cameramen.  The soldiers of both divisions have a background in photography, and have undergone basic training, a minimum of level 05 advanced combat training, and the Combat Camera Course.  On top of this, soldiers of first division train with the IDF Spokesperson Film Unit in still photography and video.  After they successfully complete the Combat Camera Course, these soldiers are stationed in the Northern, Southern or Central Commands and from there they are deployed into the field to document operations and other events carried out by IDF combat brigades. The second division is larger than the first and is comprised of soldiers who are almost indistinguishable from all other combatants – they stand on guard, they patrol, they execute training exercises and they perform operations, but all this is done with their cameras.  These soldiers have enlisted into a certain brigade and a certain battalion, gone through all the required training with their battalion and then have taken on the additional task of documenting the combat operations.
